FireFox Annoyance

Ever wanted pages to open up in a new tab instead of opening a whole new browser
in Firefox?

Type about:config into the URL, hit Enter, scroll down and find the value browser.tabs.opentabfor.openwindow, change the value to true. Then
right click in the window and select New -> Boolean, call the value browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs
and set it to true.

There will now be a new set of options in Options
-> Advanced -> Tabbed Browsing
. Check the box for Force
Links That Open New Windows
and then choose the sub-option that suits you.

You will need to restart FireFox for the settings to take effect.

Write down your password today | The Register

I really respect the work of Bruce Schneier but I had to check the date today to make sure it wasn't April Fools. Bruce Schneier & Jesper Johansson (Microsoft) are recommending that users create complex passwords and write them down! See Write down your password today | The Register

There are many well documented mnemonic techniques for remembering passwords. Once you have a good system its not that hard to generate and remember strong passwords.

Also there are tools like KeePass which mean that you only have to remember a single strong password.

Security Certifications

Have seen a few posts on the security mailing lists about certifications. Nothing beats the combination of real world experience and study, but employers and customers need the assurance of certifications.

Certifications provide a minimum baseline for the amount of knowledge that an individual should possess to perform a job function. Unfortuneately this is undermined by boot camps and the like making some certifications a joke.

I am studying for a CISSP at the moment. The CISSP is a good qualification but it should be the minimum amount of knowledge to get a security job. The CISSP covers the basics of security, having the pre-requisite of 3 years experience to sit the CISSP seems a bit of a joke.

Speaking of joke qualifications, the worst I have seen lately is the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) - a 5 day course covering 18 modules and outlining all the "hacking" tools available, no hands on, no labs. Tools change, the methodology is what stays the same.

Google Earth

Check out Google Earth. Bit disappointing when a place of interest is in low res, but otherwise it is sensational! Will be nice when complete with full hi-res pics. I have lost many hours in the last couple of days exploring the world and various places around the globe where I grew up.

UltraVNC 1.0 Final released

Check out the release version of UltraVNC. The screen driver makes for awesome performance especially in low bandwidth situation. I have been using the release candidates for a while now with no problems. I also like the file transfer functionality similar to PCAnywhere.
