Gentoo 2007.0 still in the dark ages?

The new version of Gentoo "secret sauce" is out. What I can't believe is the backwards step in the make.conf file - specifying i486 as the default system architecture (CFLAGS). Come on, surely i686 is the most common target architecture!

Why are any of the Linux distros still supporting i386 and i486 architectures at all anymore (except for Debian)? Surely the kernel code and device drivers could be cleaned up if we no longer had to support devices and architecture that hasn't been manufactured for over 13 years.

I would like to see all Linux distros putting out at least i586 compatible binaries.
